Summer Dreams in the Sand
“There is nothing quite like the feeling of sand beneath your feet, the smell of sea air, or the sound of waves crashing on the shore. “
Fulfilling dreams through a pandemic has looked a little different this year. Our patients’ and families’ health and safety are our number one priority during this ever-changing environment surrounding COVID-19. Sadly, due to restrictions, families have recently been forced to cancel, postpone or find alternative dream options. Despite facing these challenges, Project 4031 has continued making dreams come true any way possible for those we are working with because at end of life these dreams can’t wait.
There is nothing quite like the feeling of sand beneath your feet, the smell of sea air, or the sound of waves crashing on the shore. James, a veteran on hospice care, dreamed of taking a trip to the beach with his family this summer to soak in all these experiences one last time. The family originally planned to go in November 2019, but James fell sick and had an extended stay at the hospital which naturally stopped all plans for travel. With his birthday in May and James now stable enough to travel, the family planned to honor his wishes to make a road trip to the beach. They took all necessary precautions given concerns about COVID-19 because nothing could stop James’s dream, especially this trip which would give him valuable time with his granddaughter.
Project 4031 made dreams come true for James by assisting with trip expenses and renting an electric beach wheelchair to allow him to get out on the sand and enjoy the beach with everyone. The whole family had a wonderful stay relaxing at a gulf-front condo and used the boardwalk to visit the beach every day. James had a great time seeing the ocean and hunting for sand crabs. A highlight of the trip was enjoying a delicious meal at Lambert’s, a famous café near the beach known for their throwed rolls. The trip was such a special time for the whole family, and they were so grateful for the opportunity to have a special getaway and make sweet lifelong memories together with James.
“We did have a great time. It was such a blessing to get to see him happy and kick back and relax for a few days. We enjoyed our dinner at Lambert’s and the food was delicious! Thank you all again for helping us with this, it really means a lot. Please keep us in your prayers.”
