Alex’s Story

In April, we received a call from Alex’s doctor. It is very unusual that a doctor contacts us directly, but Alex had made quite an impression on his doctor who wanted to be sure Alex would have what he needed when he went home on hospice care.

His doctor told me that Alex had been a professional boxer years ago and had given boxing up to devote himself to fatherhood. His fiancée DeShawn filled in the picture: Alex, who had boxed professionally, was the number 2 lightweight boxer in the world when she met him in Michigan through a mutual friend.

They hit it off, and “from there it was magic.” When they were expecting their daughter, Alex gave up boxing professionally, but he always enjoyed working out and keeping his body strong in the boxing ring and in the gym. Alex and DeShawn went on to have two more children, and he devoted himself to being a great dad and partner. He was very loving, funny, and outspoken. DeShawn described him, “he made you feel good, made you laugh.” Alex worked in construction and owned and operated a food truck for a few years in Michigan. When they moved to Texas, the couple enjoyed eating healthy foods and taking walks together. DeShawn summed up her love for him in this way: “He was my best friend. An amazing person and a great dad and a great partner.

When the doctor introduced us to Alex, he was a concerned that he was sending Alex home for hospice care but that the electricity would be turned off. Project 4031 was able to pay the electric bill for the month to make sure Alex had the comfort of electricity when he returned home. DeShawn emailed us, “Thank you so much. We appreciate everything you did for him and his family.” Alex was a fighter in so many ways, and although he eventually lost his bout with cancer, he was a true champion who touched the lives of those around him with his energy and his fun-loving spirit.
