Hector’s Story

What does it mean when a man makes a promise “until death do us part”? According to Hector’s son, Hector lived those words. His son told us: “If there was a championship belt ‘Husband Champion of the World’, he deserved it.” When his wife became ill, he nursed her himself, despite being an amputee who relied on a wheelchair. For four years, Hector devoted himself to his wife’s care, never wanting to be far from her side as her illness took her energy and her mobility. After more than fifty years together, Hector’s wife passed away, and only then did Hector agree to move from his home in Puerto Rico to Texas to be near his older son and grandchildren. Hector, Jr, was happy to have his father nearby. He loved and respected his father who had devoted himself to his work and the family for so many years.

After leaving the army, Hector had taken a job as a janitor in a pharmaceutical company. Passionate about his work, Hector completed his education and eventually rose to the position of General Manager of the company. Focused on his family, Hector always had time for his children, vacationed with them, and raised them with tough love that always encouraged them to try, and if they didn’t succeed, to get up and keep going.

Unfortunately, not long after his move to Texas, Hector was diagnosed with stage IV cancer. Hector, Jr., spent as much time with him as he could, but because he was an employed husband and father himself, there were still times when his father was alone and needed care. Hector’s social worker directed his son to Project 4031. We were able to pay for in-home assistance for Hector for the windows of time he would be alone. After only one week receiving this assistance, Hector passed away. After Hector’s death, Project 4031 helped to cover the cost of his cremation. Hector’s son returned his ashes to Puerto Rico where Hector could be buried and rest beside his wife. His son came to the Project 4031 house to meet us, wanting to express his appreciation in person. Even though our time to assist Hector was brief, we were happy to be able to support him and his family in his final days.
